ClickWe ended the tour with a iconic “long-tail” boat ride through some of Bangkok’s canals. For those who aren’t familiar, these boats have huge motors in the back with propellor shafts that extend about 8 feet past the stern of the boat. The area we toured is considered a poor neighborhood. A room starts at […]
Wat Arun – Temple of the Dawn
ClickWat Arun is considered one of the most iconic temples in the world. It is on the other side of the Chao Phraya River from the Royal Palace complex. We were all pretty tired by the time we arrived, but were delighted by the “play acting” happening. Apparently, many Thai movie stars and models have […]
Royal Palace, Emerald Buddha, Reclining Buddha
ClickThe Royal Palace is a huge jumble of buildings, wats (temples), stupas, and tourist infrastructure. 8 million people visit each year, and it seemed like they all came the day we did. It hasn’t been the residence of the royal family since the 1900’s, but is still used for some ceremonial events, like welcoming foreign […]
Finally…We’re On Our Way!
ClickWe woke to the shocking and frightening news that DJT had regained the presidency. If you will permit me a short digression: I was raised in a time that character was the primary requirement for our nations leaders. That at the end of the day, citizenship is more important than partisanship. I’m not so naive […]
Belexit
ClickOur flight home was scheduled for 11:00. Taking the water taxi back would have required getting up for the 6:30 a.m. water taxi. We decided to fly back to Belize City instead. The Tropic Air propeller plane held about 15 passengers and the pilot. We think the passenger in the co-pilot’s seat above was put […]
Kareem’s
ClickKareem’s barbecue is ranked the #5 restaurant on Caye Caulker by TripAdvisor. He has a few grills set up just before The Split. It is pretty good, or as they say on Kareem’s sign, “unbelizeable,” and not expensive. A few random shots:
On/In the Water with the Caveman
ClickWe had planned our snorkeling adventure with Caveman Tours (Caveman pictured above) on Tuesday. Tuesday and Wednesday had winds of 21 and 24 knots respectively. We opted for waiting until a calmer day. Our first stop was to feed the Tarpons. Next we were lucky enough to see a manatee. They can stay underwater for […]
Jans Hotel
ClickJan’s Hotel was simple, but nice. There was a bed, table, chairs, mini-fridge, and bathroom. The water pressure was great. They had water to refill your water bottles. And they had a golf cart to take us to the airport. Looking north and south early in the morning.
Stingrays
ClickThe Iguana Reef Inn is probably the most luxurious resort on the island. It’s very nice, but not sure I’d call it luxury. There were a lot of Brits there. Every day at 4:00, they feed the stingrays. They also through fish into the air, and pelicans swoop down.
Western Sunset at Maggie’s
ClickNot surprisingly, the best places to see sunsets are on the Western shore. There are plenty of restaurants. This night we chose Maggie’s. When we arrived, all of the picnic tables on the deck had been taken. We were seated in the back. The owner asked us why we were there, to which we replied […]
