After picking up “the 1” at Leggett, just south of the Humboldt Redwoods, we headed over to the coast. Just south of Albion we turned inland again on highway 128. It was another beautiful road through another redwood forest. Eventually it opened to the Anderson Valley.
The Anderson Valley is about 100 miles north of San Francisco. There is a growing viticulture industry, and we passed many vineyards. Our first stop was the Greenwood Ridge vineyard for a shared tasting. They had a great sauvignon blanc. Their pinot noirs were okay.
We went a bit further, then stopped at the Goldeneye Vineyard. This vineyard is owned by the Duckhorn family. They use “ducks” as a theme, hence “Goldeneye,” a type of duck. This place was beautiful, as was the weather.
Doug took good care of us, and we tasted their Chardonnay, and several Pinot Noirs, both blended and single vineyard. Doug tells us that many visitors compare the Anderson Valley today to Napa 20-30 years ago. It was well worth the visit.
