Audley End

We started our Sunday heading out to one of Lisa and Ben’s favorite pubs for a very British Sunday lunch.  I had the roast beef with mash, vegetables, and Yorkshire pudding.

We then headed off to tour Audley End House, a large early 17th-century country house outside Saffron Walden, Essex, England.  It was once a prodigy house, a palace in all but name and renowned as one of the finest Jacobean houses in England. Audley End is now one-third of its original size, but is still large, at least compared with houses I’ve lived in.  There are over 300 paintings, and a huge collection of stuffed animals, primarily birds (some extinct). It remains the family seat of the Lords Braybrooke, who have graciously loaned their collections.  It is run by the Heritage Trust.

It turns out that touring country houses makes one quite thirsty, so we had to stop at another pub on the way home.

  2. YUM! Did you know that popover dough is the same as that which is poured into the roast beef drippings for Yorkshire pudding?
