We woke to the shocking and frightening news that DJT had regained the presidency. If you will permit me a short digression: I was raised in a time that character was the primary requirement for our nations leaders. That at the end of the day, citizenship is more important than partisanship. I’m not so naive […]

Postcard From Ellen’s Edge: Ruin Fatigue
We are getting a little ancient ruins fatigue! There are a lot of ruins in this part of South America. We are missing our friends and family. Planning where to go, what to see, and figuring out how to make it happen inexpensively can be exhausting. This traveler life is not for the faint of […]
Up Up and Away (Finally)
It’s been a while, but we have great news! Ellen’s surgeon has cleared her to travel, with the proviso of regular trips to the doctor for dressing changes. We’d been discussing what to do next, but even so it took a bit of getting used to the idea of actually leaving the beach. We’re starting […]
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas! Feliz Navidad! Christmas Wishes! It’s now been 3 1/2 months since leaving St. Paul, and 4 months since homelessness. What a long strange trip it’s been! There are two main constants that have we have seen along the way: People tend to be pretty great – whether American, Ecuadorian, friends, acquaintances, or total strangers, […]
Booked!
We’ve booked our tickets to Ecuador, registered at Yanapuma, and are finalizing the last details before departure. We’ll celebrate Thanksgiving with Blakey late, on the weekend after the actual holiday. On Wednesday, December 2nd, we fly back to LAX from San Francisco, leaving the car with Blakey, and get on our flight to Guayaquil, Ecuador. […]
Post Card from Ellen’s Edge!
Carole King and Cat Stevens are singing to me and Steve is tolerating it pretty well. We have made it to the ocean! I keep getting asked what it is like to be on the road together so much, what do we do? How are we getting along? Well, we read a lot, listen to books […]
Westward Slow
Even the best laid plans… The condo is rented and on its way to being purchased (hopefully). The Lexus is sold. Financial and legal matters are settled. Valuables are in the safe deposit box. We are still in town. There has been a slight medical clearance hiccough in leaving town. We are optimistic it will […]
Saint Paul, Our Point of Departure
Saint Paul has been a very important place in our lives. Ellen arrived as a young girl and grew up here. I came for Macalester College and grew up here (maybe). We married here, had and raised a family here, developed a community here, and recovered from the great recession here. Now we are embarking […]
But What About Mac?
One of the first questions we get is “what about Mac?” The truth is, Mac is the greatest dog ever, he’s been through a lot with us, and he can’t join us in South Africa. Fortunately, we’ve had several offers to become Mac’s step parents.
The Big Picture
We aren’t exactly starting from scratch here. We’ve been working on our plan for some time. Here are the elements we see lining up: We have been invited by the US Peace Corps to serve in The Republic of South Africa for 27 months starting in January of 2016. We do need to be medically […]
