Having rented a car in Granada, and having Nancy the only driver in order to save the €10, and having Nancy practice her driving in the gothic streets of Albaicin, we set off for the coast on the eventual way to Seville.
We had stops to make on the way.
First we went to Frigiliana. This is where old neighborhood friends David and Cheri have their spanish home. The town is on the coastal side of the mountains, and it was a bit socked in with clouds. We stopped for coffee and croissants.
It was back to the coast where we headed to Estepona for lunch. This is a town of which we heard quite often when Ellen’s parents were sailing in the Med. They had wintered here several times. We found a beach cafe and had lunch.
We eventually made it to Chiclana de la Frontera where Nancy had arranged to meet with a childhood friend from Green Bay. They hadn’t seen each other since Nancy was about 12. Her friend, Karen, had married a Spaniard and has lived here for decades.
Chiclana is popular as a beach resort for Spaniards. It is on the Atlantic side of Gibraltar, with miles of beaches, hotels, restaurants, and golf courses. Karen has started an organization called “Chiclano Walk and Talk,” in which people who want to speak English get together several times a week to walk and talk. It so happened that we had arrived at just the right time for a walk on the beach.
We met some nice people, expats and locals, walked, talked, and enjoyed drinks afterwards. The next morning we met Karen and Claire, another American expat from Madrid, for breakfast. They were lovely people, and we enjoyed our time there immensely.
These pictures are fantastic and you both look great. So happy you are having such a wonderful time.
