We decided to take public transport to go to Samyan Mitrtown mall to meet Kannika and her parents. It is located on a corner of the Chulalongkorn University campus.
First we took a public bus to the MTS (Underground) stop. 10 THB (about $.30).
We then got on the MTS. 60 THB ($1.76)
And then…
After an amazing lunch with papaya salad, fried chicken, fried fish, pork, and black sticky rice, we said goodbye to Kannika’s parents and toured Chulalongkorn University.
Turns out Kannika was recognized last month by the Princess of Thailand as the top researcher in her field.
Post Card
For those of you who don’t remember, Kannika came to Macalester at 16. We were a host family for her and 2 Japanese students and one American from Boston, who was studying Japanese and tagged along happily! It was a very fun experience for Peter and Blakey to have college kids as guests for dinner and long holidays that they couldn’t go home. Seeing her again, I realized how my view of our relationship and hers as a college student to “adult” was more different then I had recognized then. If you think about where your mind is in college and how much; or lack there of of space; there is for much else from people in between your parents and and you I am once again amazed at the strength and insight of youth. It is such an honor to have known and still know her.
She has graciously invited us to stay the weekend at her family home and meet her kids now 8 and 12. Almost the same ages as Peter and Blakey were.
