Saturday My volunteered to take the girls to their various dance and piano lessons, thus freeing up Kook to play with us. She wanted to take us to Ko Kret and the Chatuchak Weekend Market.
Ko Kret
Ko Kret is a small island in the Chao Phraya River, just north of Bangkok. It was a settlement of the Mon people from Burma, who were famed for their terracotta ceramics. This traditional earthenware is still produced in potteries along the river. On the northeastern tip of the island, there is a leaning stupa (once not leaning).
We took a long-tail boat over.
There are no cars allowed on the island, plenty of bicycles and a few scooters. We walked about taking in the sites. After the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, the calmness was a welcomed relief.
When we saw a tarot reader, it was too good to pass up.
We continued out walk, passing a pottery class, classic Thai sweets, a view of a huge golden buddha, and lunch, before taking a more civilized ferry back.
Chatuchak Market
Chatuchak Weekend Market is home to 15,000 stalls spanning 26 sections and is the world’s largest weekend market. At this colossal market, you can find local delicacies, clothing, second-hand merchandise, home decor, handicrafts, antiques, and even plants. Kook had a handy map, that showed where the different sections were located.
That Night
We went to a mall for one of their favorite seafood restaurants. But first, gifts for the family.
Post Card
I am ready to leave Bangkok, as it is a very congested city, but I will miss this family that has been so welcoming and accommodating. It has been a good way to get into this culture, as it can be sensory overload. I do want to come back before I leave Thailand to go to the market again!
