Yesterday was my last class volunteering as a tutor at the Ronald M. Hubbs Center for Lifelong Learning. Over the last semester I spent 6 hours each week in a beginning English class. Our students were primarily adults from Eastern African countries.
Each student gave me a thank you card at the end of class.
I found the experience extraordinarily enriching, and may well have got more from it than the students. It was humbling to share the experience of adults learning a brand new language. In some cases the students had never attended school, and were learning reading, writing, speaking, and computer.
A big hats off to Janice Bisch, the salsa-dancing teacher with the patience of a saint.
