Maeklong Railway Market

I’ve got to hand it to people that have found a way to monetize something that is ubiquitous throughout Southeast Asia. They make a big deal of the railway market, and how the shop keepers and restauranteurs set up over the tracks, only to put it all away when the train comes by.

There is a similar spot in Hanoi. But I’m told that if one takes a local train, one will see similar all over the place.

We took a tour to here and the floating market. The 1 1/2 hour drive was interesting due to the massive construction of an elevated highway system that looks like it goes for miles. There will be 11 expressways, with 1100 stone pillars to hold it up. Apparently they made great progress during the covid shutdown, as the cement trucks went all out.

The railway. Never has one seen so many people jamming in to take a picture of a train.

  • People are on the tracks
  • Everything is removed from the track
  • The train comes
  • Many pictures are taken
  • The train goes
  • Everything is put back on the track

Yeah.

Post Card

It was fun and funny! Great to get out of the city a bit, still jet lagged but feeling better. Boy is it nice to be retired and absolved from most responsibilities.
