Melaka

The above picture is a Melakan trishaw. I guess it’s a matter of taste, but I find them rather fun. At night they are all lit up.

We’re staying at “The Sterling Boutique Hotel,” which is a more imposing name than hotel.

It’s not terrible, just not imposing. It is also a nice location, near Little India, Chinatown, and Dutch Square. We have modified our opinions on picking hotels. Originally, we thought pools would be important to handle the hot steamy weather. We’ve rarely used pools, and now opt for hotels that are as close to the center of things we’re interested in as can be.

Melaka is working hard to become a major tourism destination in Malaysia. There is a lot of history here, and most of it centers around the river. It’s been tricked out pretty good, and there are a myriad of lights at night for walkers and boat tours.

The other big thing here is the Saturday Night Market on Jonkers Street. As we happened to be here on Saturday night, we took a stroll. The food offerings reminded us of the Minnesota State Fair. Most of the merchandise for sale was probably made in China, and was aimed at tourists.

Melaka is our last stop in Malaysia. Tomorrow we head to Singapore and begin part 2 of this journey, which brings us home. But not for almost 2 more months!. We get on the repositioning cruise to Sydney. We will be stopping for day trips to various places along the way, that you wouldn’t go to necessarily if you didn’t do it this way. Stay tuned for those out of the way p[aces some you will have heard of others that may be new. We are viewing this part, as a slow warm up to retirement at home as it won’t be so much constant stimulation of different culture and foods, (though a cruise ship is its own culture). We are happy to have made it this far and eager to continue.

  1. What an interesting trip this has been. Thanks for taking us along so far. As interesting as the photos and the descriptions of the places and things you’ve seen has been how the two of you have adjusted and readjusted to the countries you’ve seen and the people you’ve met – and your ability to travel at “your age” have been equally fascinating. It’s been a great ride along so far, Steve!
