We had planned our snorkeling adventure with Caveman Tours (Caveman pictured above) on Tuesday. Tuesday and Wednesday had winds of 21 and 24 knots respectively. We opted for waiting until a calmer day.
Our first stop was to feed the Tarpons.
Next we were lucky enough to see a manatee. They can stay underwater for up to15 – 20 minutes.
On to the barrier reef. Belize has the 2nd longest barrier reef in the world, at 180 miles long. It is also the largest living barrier reef in the world. The water was pretty hazy, we think because of the rough weather the previous few days, but I was able to post process the pics a bit.
Finally, a stop with the nurse sharks. I chose not to swim with them, even though they are perfectly safe. Apparently, this is the spot where fisherman used to clean their catches. The sharks make a b-line to any new boat that comes into the area. They leave just as quickly when the boat stops chumming the water.
