A word about Quepos, the town in which we stayed most of the week. Quepos is a district and the capital of Aguirre canton in Puntarenas Province. The population is about 22,000 people.
Although the town is about 60 km. south (in a straight line) from Costa Rica’s capital, San José, it is 157 km from that city by road, and the traffic was backed up for hours as we drove in (due to it being the end of New Year’s holidy).
Quepos is the gateway to Manuel Antonio National Park. The city is very tourism-oriented, and is full of bars, restaurants, and night-life.
The town is named for the native Quepo Indians who inhabited the place in the colonial era.
We went into the town for supplies, and were dropped off there after our trip to Manuel Antonio. We had lunch, where I had a casado, the typical fare, with beans, rice, hash (made of vegetables including “water” squash), salad, and some protein – pork, fish, chicken, or beef. One in our party, who shall remain nameless, had Sangria. The restaurant was adorned with huge mural size paintings of weddings.
On our way out of town, we stopped at the weekly market.
