We spent the night in Red Lodge, Montana. Neither of us had ever been, and we both wanted to see it. Turns out it is a nice Montana town. It is at about 5500 feet of elevation, but doesn’t seem it. This may partially be because it is in a river valley. The ski area is about 6 miles away.
Given the elevation combined with the time of year, it is pretty cold at night. Camping seemed a bad idea, and it is off-season in Red Lodge. We decided to stay at the famous Yodeler Motel. Not only is it on the national historic register, but it has steam showers in each room.
One can imagine our surprise when we saw a flock of wild turkeys strutting along Broadway Avenue. I spoke with the proprietor, and it seems that “wild” may have become a misnomer. A flock of 20 birds has become 250, and the Red Lodge residents are not sure how to handle the situation. I am reminded of how we sometimes find Canada Geese annoying.
Next morning we got up, had some coffee and took off.
