The Golden Triangle is only an hour and a half away from Chang Rai. We took off in search of coffee for the way out. Stopped at an Amazon. No relationship to the Amazon we know so well, but very common in Thailand.
We were told that the Golden Triangle is more or less a photo op, but nothing special. It is cool seeing Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand separated only by rivers. The Chinese have invested heavily in Laos, building high-rise condos and casinos…most standing empty.
Pete had touted the “Opium Museum,” so we went to check it out. It was excellent. Wow, the opium wars were something else. Didn’t know that the government of Thailand still has the monopoly on opium in the country.
Chiang Khong
We headed down to Chiang Khong where we were to meet our Mekong tour the next day. Our hotel was right on the Mekong, looking over to Laos. There was a lovely night market going on along the river. At the other end was a tall totem decorated with naga (demons) and a stage with a DJ playing music. We watched as a Thai music orchestra gathered. There was also a group of women all dressed the same. Lek told us that they were dancers, as they were all wearing flowers in their hair. It was a lovely evening.
we said goodbye in the morning and boarded our boat to Laos !
Thanks for your updates. Fun to read and see your trip.
