Tuesday we finally hit the Pacific Ocean.
We then hit the third tine of our trinity (Theodore Roosevelt National Park, Crater Lake National Park, and the redwoods).
Our first encounter was driving through Jebediah Smith State Park. At Del Norte State Park we had a picnic lunch and visited the “Big Tree.” At Redwood National Park we hiked the Ladybird Johnson Trail. We drove the Avenue of the Giants in Humboldt State Park where we camped.
It rained during the night.
We were quite cozy in our tent, and the redwood canopy protected us quite well. The rain itself sounded like pine needles hitting the tent. But the much larger drops of water from the redwood branches sounded like popcorn popping when it hit the tent. I slept with the thought that I would rise to a foot of popcorn surrounding the tent.
It didn’t happen, and we awoke to a beautiful sunny morning.
On a side note, we couldn’t help but notice that the trees go right up to the road. This includes state and federal highways. I’m not sure why Wisconsin needs to have so much space on either side in which the trees are removed.
