Our first full day with Peter and Lek at their wonderful home in Chang Rai. After a cold shower, (the water heater was just going in), we started the day with coffee on the veranda. Actually, this is where we have all of our meals. We’ll cover this in another future blog.
Do Home
They had some errands to do, so we headed to a road that has five or six home improvement stores. Think Lowe’s and Home Depot, only bigger. We landed at “Do Home,” because it was new and they hadn’t tried it before.
The White Temple
We headed next to the White Temple, a major tourist attraction in Thailand. It was designed and built by Chalermchai_Kositpipat, a master Thai artist. There is a museum of his work on site, and it is very impressive, starting when he was a young boy.
We actually didn’t go into the temple, as it was veery crowded and we could see most of it from the outside. We did, however, get introduced to Khao Soi, a traditional dish made with hand-sliced rice noodles in clear broth and topped with minced pork. It is fantastic, and we look forward to locating it when we return to the Twin Cities.
Cycling
Pete and I took a little drive on their motorcycles. Not far, but the roads are very windy and hilly around their place. I came away unconvinced that I could drive hundreds of miles.
Fishing
We decided to go fishing, to see if we could rustle up some dinner. Lek often fishes at the pond at the house, but this place stocks their pond, so it’s more likely to get something. Ellen and Lek gave it a try. Pete and I drank beer. Lek was able to land a tilapia, that we did steam and eat the next night. This night, we picked up some pizzas.
Postcard from Ellen
I like fishing! Lek is great she baits my hook!
I must have missed it, but who are Peter and Lek, and how do you know them? I love the architecture and the sculpted hedges.
