Where Foodies and Shamans Meet

We had visited the mercado (market) 10 de Augosto (they name a bunch of stuff after dates – especially markets and streets) several days ago.  When I saw the roast pig I knew I would be returning.

Today we came back.  Now that we are in an apartment near the central part of the city, we are only about four or five blocks away.  After my class, we made our way to the market.  First is the market in the plaza of San Sebastian:

Then we headed to the “Diez de Agosto” next door.  This is the premier market in Cuenca.  One can find all types of food, clothing, and fast food.  By “fast food” I mean food that is cooked right there.

One of the most likeable things here is when you see (usually young) people carrying food from those who make it to those who consume it.  They just go get a plate or bowl of something and go.  It’s great!

We wanted pork and we got it.  Here are shots of the market:

We were treated to an additional sight when Ellen saw the lines of people waiting for the shamans (healers).  It was great to see the indigenous healers at work:
